Things You Didn’t Know About Your Body

May 26th, 2006

I found this really interesting page today with some facinating facts about your body, some I already knew but there are facts in there that I never knew.  For example did you know that you should guzzle — don’t sip — water: Downing big gulps cues your body to get it into the system faster.

What is in a cigarette?

February 15th, 2006

I found this on the internet today and thought it would be a good reminder to the people who do smoke, what they are putting in their bodies.

Over 4000 chemicals

43 known cancer-causing substances

Including…
Nicotine - addictive drug in tobacco
Tar - used to patch roads
Ammonia - found in floor and toilet cleaner
Butane - lighter fluid
Hydrogen Cyanide - gas chamber poisoning
Carbon Monoxide - poisonous gas in car exhaust
Formaldehyde - preservation of body tissue
Methane - rocket fuel
Cadmium - batteries
Arsenic - rat poisoning
Methanol - wood alcohol
Acetylene - fuel used in torches
Nitrous Oxide - poisonous gas
Benzene - toxic solvent

If you smoke a pack a day, after 30 years(if your’re still alive), you will have smoked about 220,000 cigarettes and consumed about 7 pounds of tar. Those cigarettes, if laid end-to-end, would cover about 11 miles.

Bird Flu Vaccine works on Mice

February 3rd, 2006

Researchers in the United States say they have genetically engineered a vaccine that protects mice from the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.

In experiments, the vaccination was shown to be 100 percent effective in protecting against both mortality and weight loss in mice injected with several different strains of H5N1, commonly known as avian flu.

This is a step in the right direction to finding a human vaccine for the deadly Bird Flu.
